José Gayà left out of Spain squad

Luis de la Fuente named his Spain squad for the Nations League finals, and a big omission was José Gayà.

The Valencia captain has not had his best season but will be very disappointed to miss out completely especially given that Juan Bernat has been called up in his place.

Jordi Alba was always going to be a certainty, the Barca veteran has had another good season and still has a lot to offer.

Bernat on the other hand, has played 18 league games this season compared to Gayà’s 30. Bernat has also received most of his game time due to the constant injuries to youngster Nuno Mendes, who has missed 132 days this season due to injury.

Gayà has played just 19 times for the Spanish national team. He has just turned 28 and is now entering his prime.

Jordi Alba is not far from retirement, and the Valencia man will want to nail down that Spanish left-back spot as his own for at least the next few years.

Not being included in this squad is a huge setback, and with talented young players like Alejandro Balde waiting in the wings, Gayà cannot afford to miss out on these opportunities.
