João Félix scores first goal for Atlético Madrid in 8 months

Atlético Madrid cruised to a 3-0 win over Real Betis at a very wet Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday.

Yannick Carrasco opened the scoring with a fine strike in the first half and the home side went in 1-0 ahead at the break. Betis defender Germán Pezzella headed the ball into his own net just after the hour mark, before substitute João Félix added the third and final goal of the game in the Spanish capital.

According to Opta, it was the Portuguese forward’s first goal for Atlético in 948 minutes. His last goal came against Villarreal in February of this year.

Up next for Diego Simeone’s side is a trip to Anfield to face Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the Champions League on November 3. Los Colchoneros return to league action next weekend when they travel to Mestalla to take on Valencia.

Sunday’s win sees the current La Liga champions move onto 22 points, just two off table-toppers Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Sevilla. Real Betis, who have started the season in good form, stay in 5th place on 21 points.
