‘It worked’ – José Mourinho reveals his tactical blueprint to defeat Barcelona

Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho has provided an insight into the details of the midfield masterplan he put in place en route to getting the better of Barcelona on Sunday.

Real, of course, are fresh off an outing to remember yesterday evening. After making the trip to Catalunya’s capital for the season’s first edition of El Clásico, Los Blancos breathed fresh life into the La Liga title race courtesy of a 2-1 triumph.

Kylian Mbappé proved himself the star of the show, netting both goals for the visitors, including a late winner.

But it was Real Madrid’s midfield setup which the aforementioned José Mourinho feels truly made the difference in besting Hansi Flick’s Barca.

Speaking to the media in the game’s aftermath, Mourinho was drawn on Eduardo Camavinga’s superb late assist, courtesy of a lung-busting surge forward from midfield.

And the Portuguese tactician made use of the question to explain his blueprint for effectively breaking Barcelona’s high line:

“I told Camavinga: go and attack the space.

“It’s difficult for any attackers to attack space against Barcelona; the only solution is to do it with your midfielders. When your attackers do it, Barca’s defence is prepared and coached for that, and your attackers end up being offside, or the pass ends up being cut out by Joan García.

“The solution is to use midfielders like Camavinga and Bellingham to break that line, and it worked.”
