“It was 50-50” – Lucas Bergvall opens up on rejecting Barcelona for Tottenham

Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall has this afternoon provided an insight into the reasoning behind his decision to turn down the advances of La Liga giants Barcelona, to instead put pen to paper on terms with Tottenham Hotspur.

The name of midfielder Bergvall, of course, proved one of the most discussed in all of Europe in the buildup to the January transfer deadline.

This came after word was forthcoming that, at the last minute, Barca had seen their long-standing efforts to bring the 17-year-old in hijacked, by the aforementioned Tottenham.

Deco and his team spent weeks in discussions with both their counterparts at Djurgårdens, and Bergvall’s representatives, desperate to strike a deal with a view to the Swede arriving in Catalunya this summer.

This comes with Bergvall widely considered to be one of the continent’s standout up-and-coming talents.

When all was said and done, however, the Blaugrana’s efforts came up short.

The midfield prodigy instead opted to commit to the terms of a long-term contract in north London, with Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs.

And, as alluded to above, on Monday, Bergvall himself has provided an insight into precisely why.

As cited by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the teenage talent admitted that his final decision proved a ‘very difficult’ one to make, with Barcelona and Tottenham ‘both incredible clubs’.

In the end, though, the latter simply felt like the logical ‘next step’ in his fledgling career:

“They are both incredible clubs,” Bergvall began.

“It was a very difficult choice, it was 50-50, It felt like the next step for me was Tottenham. It was not very easy to say no to Barça — it took a very long time to decide.”
