Girona manager Míchel: “Our aim this season is Europe”

Girona’s impressive start to the season has left them joint-top of the table with Real Madrid and with a chance of lifting the La Liga trophy come the end of the season. But head coach Míchel has talked down his side’s chances of finishing the season top of the league.

Speaking to the press, in words reported by Marca, before they face Atlético Madrid, who sit in third place, Míchel said that his only hope is that his team “makes it to Europe”.

You may think that this team should be fighting for the title, given how well we’ve done so far, but the objective isn’t to finish first. We want to have a great year and finish in Europe, which would be huge for Girona.”

While he highlighted that if his side takes it game by game, they can go far, he noted that they are not in a position to compete with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético. Speaking ahead of the upcoming match against Atlético, he acknowledges that they will have to be at their best to come away with a result.

Finally, regarding activity in the January transfer window, he adds that Girona are “calm” despite multiple rumours, especially around Aleíx García, but the coach from Madrid is confident that the club captain won’t be leaving to join Barcelona.
