La Liga club Girona are in talks with Southampton for midfielder Oriol Romeu, who has a contract with the Premier League club until June 2023, according to journalist Nil Sola.
The current salary of Romeu is much higher than what can be offered by newly-promoted Girona and is the main obstacle in the deal, as things stand.
Girona manager Míchel is believed to be very keen on signing the 30-year-old. The club want six more players for Míchel before the end of the transfer window.
The Spanish midfielder is a versatile player who Míchel likes because he can play as a defensive midfielder as well as a central midfielder.
Girona have been keeping a close eye on him for some time and he would also bring a lot of experience to their midfield this season as he has played in the Bundesliga, with Stuttgart, and in the Premier League, with Southampton and Chelsea.
Romeu was on the bench for Southampton’s 2-2 draw with Leeds at the weekend.
The Catalan side’s first game of the new season ended in a 1-0 defeat to Valencia at Mestalla on Sunday.
