Girona leading the way in La Liga

There is a new La Liga leader. Girona have taken advantage of Real Madrid and Barcelona’s recent slip-ups to move to the top of the table with 19 points from a possible 21.

Míchel’s side started the season with a draw against Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena and, since then, it has been all wins. The have made it six wins in a row, a run that a team with similar aspirations has not achieved since the early 90s, when Tenerife did it, according to MisterChip.

The record for consecutive wins in La Liga outside the big three (Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid) is held by Villarreal, who made it nine back in 2007.

Girona have become the fourth Catalan team to lead the way in La Liga after Barcelona, Espanyol and Sabadell, and the 40th in the history of the competition.

Next up for the in-form Girona is Real Madrid at home on Saturday.
