Gerard Piqué: “We have lost five games in a row but I’m not going to fire the coach”

Former Barcelona centre-back Gerard Piqué has, on Wednesday, provided his full backing to under-fire Blaugrana head coach Xavi Hernández.

The name of tactician Xavi has of course found itself front and centre in the headlines in Catalunya over the course of the last 24 hours.

Unfortunately for the ex-midfield standout, though, this has come for altogether less than positive reasons.

After Barca were condemned to a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, fresh questions surrounding Xavi’s readiness to lead the club back to their former glories have spread amongst fans and the media alike.

One individual, however, who has no doubts as to the Spaniard’s credentials, comes in the form of ex-teammate Gerard Piqué.

Speaking in an interview with RAC1, via AS, on Wednesday, Piqué, now owner of second-tier outfit FC Andorra, opened up on a number of topics.

One such subject came in the form of Xavi’s abilities in the dugout, with his fellow countryman having thrown his full support behind Barca’s headmaster:

“You need patience, like with any project. At Andorra, we have lost five games in a row but I’m not going to fire the coach. As long as there are solutions, you have to be patient. I know that you have to win every day here, but Xavi is one of our own, he knows the club, he loves the club, and is the ideal person to lead Barça.“
