In the last days of the transfer window, Barcelona scrambled to free up enough of their wage budget to register Gavi as a first-team player. The club didn’t manage to do so before the deadline but appealed to a rule in which there’s a period to submit paperwork after the deadline.
As reported by Diario AS, Barcelona’s case has been rejected in court, thus unregistering the young talent from the first team. The decision was made on March 16, which was shortly followed by a challenge from the Catalan club. However, the court recently announced it stands by its decision.
This won’t interrupt Gavi’s capacity to play for the Blaugrana due to his registration as a youth-team player. Still, the consequences of this ruling may also pose problems for next season as Barcelona will once again have to free up the wage budget to secure his place in the first team for the 2023-24 campaign.
