Frenkie De Jong open to leaving Barcelona in the summer

The future of Frenkie de Jong is more open than ever with Relevo reporting that this is the closest the player has come to leaving Barca since his arrival in the 2020/21 season. The Dutchman is no longer closing the door on leaving the Catalan club, which is a drastically different stance to two summer ago, when Manchester United were interested in buying him.

President Joan Laporta even confirmed that the English club had offered €100m for his services, however the club had to reject the offer due to the Frenkie’s refusal to leave. Man United manager Erik ten Hag is a huge admirer of his former Ajax player and would desperately want to reunite with the playmaker in the Premier League.

Despite being considered a crucial part of the new project at Barca, the 26-year-old is disappointed with the current situation and believes that the sporting expectations, which were promised when he signed for the club have not been met. Manager sackings coupled with the financial crisis, has restricted the club’s ability to compete for the Champions League, which has prevented De Jong from fulfilling his desire to win the prestigious competition.

On the other hand, the Spanish giants also have doubts about De Jong, who in their eyes hasn’t lived up to expectations. Consequently, the club are beginning to favour the idea of the midfielder leaving the club, as they will have to sell one of their important players to finance new arrivals in the summer. The Netherlands international is at the top of the Cule salary scale and due to deferrals in the payment of his salary, he earned €24.8m this season, the highest of any player at the club.

Although, sporting director Deco revealed that the club do not want to sell any of their key players to fund signings, there is a need for last years La Liga winners to balance the books before the end of June and De Jong’s sale could facilitate this.
