Former Real Madrid star Mesut Özil makes use of ‘blue card’ news to aim dig at Atlético

The latest social media activity on the part of ex-Real Madrid star Mesut Özil has piqued widespread attentions this evening.

This comes after the German made use of the opportunity to aim a less than subtle dig at Diego Simeone’s Atlético.

News of a new officiating system set to be trialled in English football, potentially as soon as next season, was announced earlier today.

The initiative in question will see referees afforded a new ‘blue card’, alongside their customary yellow and red.

As much will come into play in the case of a player committing a cynical foul, or being guilty of excessive verbal dissent towards an official.

The blue card will see the player in question punished by way of a rugby-esque 10-minute ‘sin bin’.

And one individual evidently of the opinion that as much would prove a detrimental blow to one of Spanish football’s heavyweight sides comes in the form of the aforementioned Mesut Özil.

Taking to his official ‘X’ account to respond to news of the blue card’s imminent introduction, the German made clear his ongoing allegiance to the white half of the Madrid divide, by way of a dig at an Atlético side whom Özil feels play on the very edge of the rules:

“So Atletico Madrid will only play with 6 players then?”, he wrote.
