Real Betis star Fran García has on Friday provided an insight into the reasoning behind his decision to call time on his stint with Real Madrid this past summer.
This comes as his current and former employers prepare to lock horns in a La Liga clash later this evening.
Defender Fran for his part departed Real Madrid for the 2nd time in his career back in early July. After returning to base at Valdebebas in the summer of 2023 following a stint on the books of Rayo Vallecano, the 27-year-old opted for a new challenge in Seville.
Fran, all told, managed 69 La Liga appearances across his three years back in the famed white of Los Blancos, chiefly acting as backup for some of the club’s more high-profile left-back options.
And it was this status which ultimately led the Spaniard to seek out a new challenge with a view to the season ahead. Drawn on his decision to join Real Betis during an interview with Diario AS this week, Fran admitted:
“I left Real Madrid because I wanted a bigger role. My number of games there wasn’t bad at all, but I wanted something different. At Betis, everything has made the transition easy. My teammates, the coaching staff and everyone at the club have helped me settle into a new city.
“It’s the biggest club in the world, but I’d already made up my mind last season. I was happy there. I played, I won trophies you dream about as a kid. But I needed something different. I was happy at Real Madrid and won trophies, but I want to compete as the main guy.”
