Former Barcelona coach Juan Carlos Unzué announces he has ALS

Speaking in a live press conference attended by family, friends, and some Barcelona players, former Barcelona assistant coach Juan Carlos Unzué announced he has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) – also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“I just wanted to tell you that I have ALS and they have given me four years to live. People have a great ability to adapt their lives. There are sick people who have a desire to continue living, despite the hardship, because life is worth it.”

The 53-year-old played as a goalkeeper for Sevilla and went on to coach at Barcelona, Celta Vigo and Girona. Unzué worked alongside Luis Enrique as assistant coach at Camp Nou.
