Julen Lopetegui on Nolito transfer: “We would have liked Nolito to stay, but his mind was in Vigo.”

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Sevilla’s clash with Barcelona on Friday, head coach Julen Lopetegui admitted he would have liked Nolito to have stayed with the Andalusian club.

Sevilla and Celta have reached an agreement for the 33-year-old forward, who is expected to complete his medical at his former club on Thursday.

We would have liked for Nolito to stay here, but his mind was in Vigo. He’s a player that has given us a lot during the year, he was a starter in large phases of the league and his contract was ending on June 30. Recently he made clear his desire to leave and from there, if he could not stay here longer, we opted for him leaving now. His mind was on an alternative future and we thank him for his work and wish him the very best of luck. We would have liked to count on him, but he chooses his path and I hope he’s lucky”.
