Deco leaves door open for Xavi to continue as manager

An update on the future of Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández has been provided today by sporting director Deco.

Barca fans are still dreaming of success in the UEFA Champions League and this could change the landscape in terms of the future of Xavi. The fact that the Spanish giants are still alive in two competitions means the feeling around the club has changed in recent weeks. After Barca’s loss to Villarreal back in January, which left them 10 points off La Liga leaders Real Madrid, the Spanish head-coach announced that he would step down at the end of the season.

Xavi’s announcement has brought changes internally and also at sporting level and according to Relevo, Deco has not closed the door on the coach continuing next year. The hierarchy at the club have not ruled out this idea and there is growing optimism that the Spaniard could continue in Barca dugout next season.

While Deco would be open to the idea of Xavi reversing his decision to step down as manager, he would want to have internal talks with him first.

He said: “Almost in every game they ask me about Xavi’s decision. If he says that he wants to continue, we would have to talk first. If he wants to continue, we would have to know his motives.”
