The CTA have on Tuesday admitted a major mistake in the officiating of this past weekend’s Madrid Derby. This comes amid confirmation that Atlético’s Lee Kang-in should have been sent off.
Attacker Kang was of course at the heart of one of a number of controversial incidents during Sunday’s showdown between Atlético and Real Madrid.
The summer arrival in Spain’s capital was responsible for a poorly-timed, dangerous challenge on Federico Valverde, directing his studs high up the ankle of the Uruguayan.
Much to the bemusement of the visitors, the tackle, however, did not result in so much as a yellow card. Not only that, but it was quickly cleared by the team of VAR officials.
And as alluded to above, this call has since been confirmed as a mistake.
As per a report from Marca, citing The CTA (Technical Committee of Referees) in Spain, the correct response would have been as follows:
‘”Direct free kick and direct red card.” It is added: “Clear and manifest error of the referee” and “The VAR should have intervened”.’
