Celta Vigo launch public defence of Óscar Mingueza after Vinícius altercation

The social media team at Celta Vigo have this evening launched a stern defence of defender Óscar Mingueza.

This comes after the former Barcelona man was at the heart of a high-profile altercation with Real Madrid standout Vinícius Jr. on Sunday night.

After the Brazilian attempted to surge clear on the break early in the 2nd-half of the Bernabéu clash between the sides, Mingueza was left with little choice but to drag Vinícius back, earning himself a yellow card in the process.

The foul culminated in a scuffle breaking out between both sets of players, with Vinícius, as so often proves the case, at the heart of things.

The 23-year-old responded to Mingueza’s pull on his jersey by directing a stern push into the chest of the Celta star, actions which saw him, too, go into the referee’s notebook.

The sheer malice behind Vinícius’ reaction saw it suggested that Mingueza may have been responsible for some form of verbal provocation, in addition to his prior foul.

As much, however, has since been all but ruled out by the TV presence in attendance in Madrid on Sunday.

With their defensive star having nevertheless been on the receiving end of some altogether aggressive behaviour on the part of several Real Madrid stars, Celta Vigo, in turn, have tonight moved to publicly defend Mingueza.

In a post across the club’s social media platforms, the Celestes unveiled the following message:

“Education, respect and professionalism. Always on our team, Óscar Mingueza.”
