Bayer Leverkusen set to appoint Xabi Alonso as head coach

Bayer Leverkusen are set to appoint Xabi Alonso as their next head coach, according to Marca.

The German side are currently second bottom in the Bundesliga, with just five points and a single win from their opening eight games.

In the Champions League, after the defeat to Porto on Tuesday night, they have only three points out of a possible nine in Group B.

Alonso is set to take over on a deal until 2024. The former Real Madrid player has been without a club since leaving Real Sociedad’s reserve team in the summer.

According to Marca, Alonso has already accepted the German side’s proposal and the agreement is expected to be made official in the next few hours.

The Spanish coach will be joined in Germany by Sebas Parrilla. The pair worked together at Real Sociedad.

Leverkusen previously sounded out Thomas Tuchel after his sacking from Chelsea, but the German coach rejected the proposal.
