Barcelona’s surprise stance on João Cancelo signing confirmed

A fresh insight into the stance of the powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona when it comes to extending João Cancelo’s time with the club has been provided on Monday.

Defender Cancelo, for his part, is currently in the midst of a year-long loan stint in Catalunya’s capital, from Premier League giants Manchester City.

To this point in the campaign, it has proven a largely successful arrangement for both parties, with the Portuguese international having established himself as a key figure in boss Xavi’s Barcelona squad.

All told, Cancelo has racked up 32 appearances across all competitions, notching four goals and four assists along the way.

Speculation in the media, in turn, has long pointed towards the Blaugrana brass preparing an offer to their counterparts at Man City, to make the full-back’s stay permanent.

With Cancelo himself having openly admitted to his hope of staying put at the Camp Nou for several seasons more, it has therefore come as something of a surprise to hear that, in fact, Barcelona are not currently considering making the 29-year-old’s signing a permanent one.

As per a report from transfer journalist Luis Rojo of Marca:

‘Barça will ask for the loan of João Cancelo for another year. At the moment, they are not thinking about buying him.’
