A long-time member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has seen his hopes of staying put with the club beyond the summer dealt a considerable blow.
That’s according to Relevo, who point towards Sergi Roberto as the player in question.
Versatile midfielder Roberto will see his current terms on Barcelona’s books come to a close this summer.
It had in turn long been confirmed in the media that negotiations between the parties were in full swing, over a fresh one-year renewal for the 32-year-old.
Some outlets, in fact, went as far as to point towards an agreement being found as all but imminent.
As alluded to above, however, if the latest update on the situation to have surfaced this weekend is anything to go by, then as much now appears to be entirely up in the air.
As per Relevo:
‘Although in previous meetings they agreed to offer him a new contract, now the club has informed Roberto that his renewal is not a priority.’
Owing to the club’s ongoing financial woes, specifically when it comes to their wage bill, Barca have come to the conclusion that Roberto’s future should be put on the back-burner for the time being.
Having been informed of as much, the Spaniard’s entourage, in turn, have begun to explore alternative options, including a summer move elsewhere.
