Barcelona star admits he didn’t take new jersey number ‘out of respect’ for on-loan teammate

Barcelona star Eric García has revealed that he did not take the no.4 jersey in Hansi Flick’s squad for the season ahead as a sign of respect for former teammate Ronald Araújo.

Stopper Araújo of course secured something of a surprise departure from Catalunya’s capital this past summer, taking his talents to England with Liverpool for the duration of the campaign.

The Uruguayan’s move came in the form of a loan, but the brass at the Spotify Camp Nou did agree to the inclusion of a purchase clause.

This means that Araújo may already have taken to the pitch in the famed red and blue of Barcelona for the final team.

One current Blaugrana star evidently of the opinion that as much is far from assured, though, comes in the form of the aforementioned Eric García.

Speaking during an interview with Cadena SER this week, World Cup winner Eric admitted:

“I didn’t take the number 4 jersey out of respect for Araujo. He left for a year and, if all goes well, he’ll return, and it’s his number.”
