Barcelona announce the launch of new streaming platform for fans

According to AS, Barcelona are set to announce the launch of Barca One in the coming weeks. This new streaming platform will host a selection of the club’s audiovisual content.

The traumatic closure of Barca TV, which broadcast from 1996 until the 30 June this year, left the club without any services to broadcast its audiovisual content for their fans. However, the Blaugrana club announced on Tuesday morning the launch of Barca One, which is described as the “Netflix of Barca” by the club.

Per the club’s press release, “it will be a free access streaming platform, with advertising, for which registration will not be necessary and where there will also be, among other things, a payment option to avoid advertisements, to which FC Barcelona members will have free access”.

Therefore, fans will be able to choose whether they want to watch the content free of charge with advertising or to sign up for a paid account to avoid ads in between the content. The club hopes this streaming platform will generate a new revenue stream and also fill the void left by Barca TV.

The decision to close the channel was motivated by the club’s delicate financial situation and the high cost of maintaining the channel, which was close to €14m a year. On this platforms, users will be fed archive content produced during the Barca TV stage (matches, programmes, reports and historical content) and will also take on production linked to current affairs such as live programmes, press conferences and pre-match build up.
