Axel Witsel: “If I have to go out as a central defender, that’s where I’ll be.”

Atlético Madrid’s Axel Witsel was called up to the Belgian national team for the country’s fixtures against Wales and the Netherlands in the Nations League.

In an interview which appeared on Marca, he looked back at Los Colchoneros’ pre-season:

“It was tough. I trained well during the vacations. But I’ve never had known such a tough preparation. It was quite intense. In the end it was good because you feel that everyone in the group is ready.”

Even though he has been playing at centre-back for Atlético Madrid so far this season, he wants to play in Belgium’s midfield:

“I prefer to play as a number six. Roberto Martinez has been clear with my position in the national team. But if I have to go out as a central defender, that’s where I’ll be.”

“I still feel very good physically to play as a midfielder. That’s where I play naturally. In defence I have to be more attentive, I have to run and stop more. It is more difficult for me, but it can prolong my career,” he added.
