Axel Witsel is two games away from having his contract automatically renewed with Atlético Madrid until June 2024, report Marca.
The 34-year-old joined Los Colchoneros in the summer of 2022 on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund. He signed a one-year-deal, which could be extended by a further season if he plays at least 50% of minutes in 25 games.
Atlético Madrid are in the process of reorganizing their squad after their disastrous performance in Europe in the autumn. Witsel is only two games away from fulfilling his contractual renewal criteria and it seems very unlikely that Diego Simeone would want to lose the Belgian midfielder.
Ever since his arrival to the Estadio Metropolitano, he has shown week in and week out why he is such a valuable member of the squad. A defensive midfielder, he also feels equally comfortable playing as a centre-back during the absence of Stefan Savić and José María Giménez.
