Atlético Madrid will play in next year’s Champions League if La Liga is cancelled

Atlético Madrid will be invited to play in next year’s Champions League if La Liga is cancelled, despite being sixth in the current La Liga standings, according to Juan Antonio Alcalá on El Partidazo de COPE.

Atlético are the only Spanish side in the last eight of this year’s competition, having knocked out Liverpool in March. Simeone’s side reached the Champions League final in 2014 and 2016.

UEFA are expected to use their right to invite a team that didn’t qualify through their domestic league into the competition based on their performances in the current campaign and over the last number of years in European competitions.
