Atlético Madrid pegged back against Lazio in unbelievable fashion

Atlético Madrid endured Champions League heartbreak on Tuesday, as Lazio managed a dramatic 95th-minute equaliser, resulting in a 1-1 draw in Rome for their opening match of the 2023-24 campaign.

Despite taking the lead in the 29th minute, thanks to a deflected long-range shot by Pablo Barrios, Atlético’s hopes were dashed when Lazio’s goalkeeper, Ivan Provedel, levelled the scoreline with a header in the dying moments of the tie.

The goal made Provedel the second goalkeeper to score in open play in the Champions League, following Vincent Enyeama’s feat for Olympique Lyonnais in 2010. Lazio salvaged a point after it had appeared that Atleti had secured all three.

On another day Los Rojiblancos will feel like they should’ve put the game to bed before the iconic moment that went against them. Antoine Griezmann missed a golden opportunity as did Samuel Lino, while Álvaro Morata hit the woodwork.

Feyenoord up next

Diego Simeone’s team take on Feyenoord next at the Civitas Metropolitano on October 4. The Dutch outfit recorded a 2-0 victory over Celtic on Tuesday night.
