Atlético Madrid hopeful of extending Diego Simeone’s contract until 2024

Atlético Madrid have spoken to head coach Diego Simeone about their intention to renew his contract until 2024, according to AS.

Club CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín revealed the plan to Simeone in the last week, expressing the desire to extend his contract with the LaLiga club beyond June 30, 2022. The Argentine coach is reportedly close to agreeing a deal with the club he joined as manager in 2011. The relationship between both parties is believed to be very strong, which should lead to a decision being finalised sooner rather than later.

Both the CEO of Atlético and club president Enrique Cerezo have never doubted Simeone’s position in the role, despite the recent speculation about his future after the club’s Copa del Rey defeat to Cornella. Negotiations for the new contract will continue in the coming weeks with Natalia Simeone, the coach’s sister and agent.

Atlético are currently top of LaLiga and in the last 16 of the Champions League, where they will face Frank Lampard’s Chelsea next month.
