A fresh update on the injury status of Atlético Madrid striker Álvaro Morata has been provided by the club today.
The club confirms that Morata suffered a bone contusion and a sprain of the internal lateral ligament of his right knee. However, this is seen by the Spanish club as positive news after initial fears that the player has picked up an ACL injury.
The forward was taken off in yesterday’s 1-0 defeat to Sevilla, with the club and fans both fearing the worst for the 31-year-old, who has been a key played for the team this season. It was thought that Morata may have torn or ruptured his ACL and this would evidently keep him sidelined for several months, meaning his season could be over.
Despite this, scans have revealed that this is not the case and the club expect the striker to be back in action in almost 20 days if his recovery goes to plan without any setbacks. The club and staff believe the Spaniard could even be available for the second of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash against Inter at the Metropolitano, as the knee injury isn’t considered to be serious.
As reported by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Morata is grateful that his knee injury isn’t serious and has thanked his fans for the support they have shown to him.
He said: “Thank God, my knee injury is not serious. Thanks a lot for the nice messages.
“I also hope that people who send so many hate messages can have just as much desire to be happy and work hard. “I’ll be at my best again soon.”
