Atlético Madrid advance to last 16 of Champions League

Atlético Madrid left it to the final gameweek of the Champions League to snatch second place in Group B with a 3-1 victory on a night full of drama in Porto.

Atlético’s night didn’t start as expected. Luis Suárez was taken off injured after just 13 minutes with a muscular problem and the sides went into the half-time break scoreless.

After some Porto dominance, Antoine Griezmann slotted home from close range in the 56th minute. With the clock ticking down, Ángel Correa and Rodrigo de Paul both scored to put the game to bed with goals to send Diego Simeone’s side through to the last 16 of the competition. Porto scored a consolation through a last-minute Sergio Oliveira penalty.

Porto ended the game with nine men and Atlético with 10. Yannick Carrasco was sent off for the away side and just three minutes later Wendell was sent off for Porto before both dugouts were involved in a heated tussle on the touchline. Agustín Marchesin received his marching orders for the Portuguese side on the full-time whistle.

In the other game in Group B, Liverpool beat AC Milan 2-1 to finish top of the group with 18 points. Porto finish in third place on five points, with Milan bottom on four.
