Atlético boss Diego Simeone on Vinícius Jr. spat & César Azpilicueta’s injury

Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone was this evening drawn on a number of noteworthy topics, during his latest post-match press conference.

Atléti, of course, marked their return to action a short time ago.

After being put to the sword by cross-city rivals Real in the Spanish Super Cup this day last week, the Rojiblancos welcomed Carlo Ancelotti’s troops to the Wanda Metropolitano, with sights set on revenge.

And, when all was said and done, secure as much is precisely what the evening’s hosts managed.

Owing to goals on the part of all of Samuel Lino, Álvaro Morata, Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme, Atlético emerged after extra-time on the right side of a 4-2 result.

Speaking on the back of his side booking their spot in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey, Diego Simeone, in turn, was drawn on a whole host of topics by the awaiting media.

And one such subject which proved particularly interesting came in the form of the Argentine’s spat with Vinícius Jr.

Upon the full-time whistle sounding in Spain’s capital on Thursday, Simeone and Vinícius were caught on camera in a heated exchange on the touchline.

Questioned on as much a short time ago, however, the former moved to play the subject down, as cited by El Larguero:

“With Vinicius? There’s nothing to comment on. These are things that happen on the pitch.”

From here, Simeone was also asked for an update on the wellbeing of César Azpilicueta, after the veteran stopper was introduced in extra-time, before being hauled off just 10 minutes later.

And, as per El Desmarque, he went on to confirm that Azpilicueta has indeed picked up an injury:

“The doctor will provide a report. I hope it is as minor as possible.”
