AS Roma closing in on Spanish midfielder Gonzalo Villar

Elche CF have accepted Roma’s offer of €4m-plus €1m in bonuses but the Giallorossi had to wait on Valencia CF to decide whether or not they would activate their option of €1m to own the player outright, according to Valencia-based journalist Héctor Gómez.

Valencia intended to keep the player on their books, however the midfielder expressed an interest in joining the Serie A outfit instead, to further his development and the Spanish side has opted against doing so. Roma head coach Paulo Fonseca personally called Villar to express his genuine interest in bringing him to Rome.

Elche travelled to UD Almeria on Sunday for their Segunda Division clash without the 21-year-old in their squad. The player, who already has an agreement in place with Roma, is expected to officially join the club in the coming days.

The Spanish U21 international will sign for four seasons.
