The blistering speed of left-back Alphonso Davies could well have been on showcase at Camp Nou if it wasn’t for former club president Josep Maria Bartomeu. The Canadian has claimed that he was denied the opportunity to play for Barcelona due to his nationality.
At just 22 years of age, Davies has become a household name in football, solidifying himself as one of the best left-backs in the game at Bayern Munich. However, the Canadian has recently revealed on a podcast that he was close to joining Barcelona before he signed for Bayern in 2019.
Speaking to the Say Less podcast, Davies remarked:
“Barcelona approached me, but the president (Bartomeu) said they didn’t want me because I was Canadian.
“I’m not going to lie to you, that hurt my feelings a little bit. That I was Canadian was being said in the press. I don’t know if he actually said it, but it was being said.”
