Alexia Putellas ruled out Women’s Euro 2022

Alexia Putellas has been ruled out of the Women’s European Championship after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in her left knee.

Spain confirmed that the 28-year-old had suffered an injury on Tuesday during a training session.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Spain said: “The tests carried out on the Spanish international on the afternoon of this Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at King Edward VII’s hospital in London, have confirmed that the captain of the Spanish Women’s National Team suffers a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.”

Putellas, a Ballon d’Or winner, has 100 caps for Spain and will be a huge loss to the team, who begin the tournament against Finland on Friday.

A few days ago, the player from Mollet del Vallés acknowledged that it was the first tournament with Spain in which she felt good.

“I have the feeling that I have never enjoyed a big tournament with the national team, for different reasons. In this one I’m enjoying it. I’m happy and I’m looking forward to the first whistle,” she said.

This is a major setback for the national team in terms of their chances in the tournament and also for Barça.
