A former Barcelona star handed Lionel Messi his Man of the Match award for Argentina 2-1 England

Barcelona legend Lionel Messi was handed his latest Man of the Match trophy by another ex-Blaugrana attacker, in Sergio Agüero, on Wednesday night.

This of course comes fresh off the 39-year-old turning back the clock for the latest occasion.

Messi’s Argentina were back in action on the international stage yesterday evening, locking horns with England with a place in the World Cup final on the line.

When all was said and done, the reigning world champions emerged on the right side of a 2-1 result, to keep alive hopes of retaining their crown.

And it was that man Messi who again proved himself the star of the show. When his country needed him most, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner stood tall, laying on the assists for both of Argentina’s goals.

Post-match, it therefore came as little surprise when Messi was named ‘MVP’ of the evening.

And as alluded to above, waiting by to hand the veteran attacker’s prize over was a close friend and former teammate, in the form of Sergio Agüero:
