Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernández this afternoon dropped something of a bombshell, regarding his future with the club.
The subject of Xavi’s position in the Barcelona dugout, of course, has returned to the forefront of the headlines over the course of the last week.
This comes after his side – amid a less than convincing recent run of form – were put to the sword in alarming fashion by arch rivals Real Madrid in the final of the Spanish Super Cup.
Murmurs of discontent, across the Blaugrana’s fanbase and squad alike, have in turn begun to mount.
In fact, many of a Barca persuasion have already gone as far as to call for their once-beloved midfield star to be moved on, adamant that he simply doesn’t possess the managerial tools to guide the club back to the top of world football.
And, should the Catalans flatter to deceive over the 2nd half of the campaign, supporters of such a mindset could well have their wishes granted.
This comes after Xavi himself on Wednesday admitted to his readiness to depart his role in the summer, under a pair of potential circumstances.
One such scenario, as cited by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, would develop in the case of the Spaniard losing the trust of his players:
“The day I notice that the players are not with me, I will take my things and leave.”
And the other would be forthcoming if Barcelona fail to ‘reach their goals’ across the remainder of the season:
“We’ve always reached the realistic goals. If this season we don’t reach our goals… then I’ll be the first to take a step back.”
