Xavi on Gerard Piqué: “He can help us in another type of role.”

In the pre-match press conference prior to their game against Valladolid that appeared on Mundo Deportivo, Xavi discussed the future of some of his players at the club, including Gerard Piqué.

The 35-year-old centre-back hasn’t started a single game so far this season as there is too much competition in the starting XI in his position:

“I spoke to him just before we went on holiday. I was also very clear and told him that we would strengthen and that it would not be easy. We’ve played two games and we can’t make any assessments. He is a player who can help us in another type of role. We’ll see how it goes, it depends on his feelings and mine. There is competition for everyone and I try to choose the best to win games,” Xavi told journalists.

The Barcelona coach also elaborated on the situation regarding Martin Braithwaite:

“Braithwaite has a contract and it depends on the negotiations with the club. He has known since the 17th of May that I do not count on him and his best option was to leave. It depends on the market, but football-wise he already knows my position. I was quite clear.”
