Xavi drawn on extending Barcelona contract beyond 2025

Barcelona head coach Xavi was this afternoon drawn on the possibility of extending his terms with the club beyond their current expiration date in the summer of 2025.

The subject of Xavi’s place on the bench at Barcelona, of course, has taken its place centre stage in the Spanish media headlines across the day to date.

This comes after the relentless efforts of the Blaugrana brass to convince their beloved headmaster to stay put at long last bore fruit.

After previously announcing his decision to step down upon the season’s close, Xavi, instead, is now in line to see out the final year on his deal.

The Spaniard confirmed as much during a press conference on Thursday afternoon:

“I have changed my mind. Rectifying is for wise people. It’s not a matter of money or ego. I saw everyone’s confidence.”

So, what then of the long-term plans in the dugout in Catalunya’s capital?

Whilst Barca’s plan for the coming 12 months has been confirmed, it remains altogether unclear how the La Liga heavyweights intend to proceed beyond the summer of 2025.

During his exchange with the media on Thursday, it therefore came as little surprise when the possibility of extending his terms as Blaugrana boss was put to Xavi himself.

The former midfielder, however, was keen for the time being to play the subject down:

“Staying beyond 2025? Renewal is very far away. The most important thing is that we have decided jointly and consensually on my continuity.”
