Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso issued a behind-closed-doors apology to Blancos youngster Víctor Valdepeñas this week.
This comes owing to a round of comments laid out by the tactician in the aftermath of his side’s recent meeting with Deportivo Alavés.
Real Madrid of course secured a much-needed return to winning ways last weekend, courtesy of a 2-1 downing of Alavés.
Young defender Valdepeñas, meanwhile, was afforded a surprise start in the fixture, amid the ongoing injury woes in Los Merengues’ squad.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a solid outing all told, proving himself a genuine option for Xabi Alonso moving forward.
Post-match, during his analysis of Valdepeñas’ performance, Real’s headmaster explained:
“We conceded on the only play where Valdepeñas made a mistake, because in all the others he was very solid.”
Though Alonso meant as much as simple analysis of the game, it was taken by many to be a needless jibe at an inexperienced player.
Made aware of as much in the days that followed, Alonso therefore took action…
As per a report from Marca:
‘Xabi decided to step forward and explain himself face-to-face with the player, making it clear that his intention was never to expose him. He wasn’t obligated to do so, but he chose to.’
