Xabi Alonso explains Vinícius Jr’s Real Madrid benching vs Oviedo

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has provided an insight into his decision to leave Vinícius Jr. out of his latest starting line-up.

Real Madrid, of course, were back in action on Sunday evening.

In the 2nd outing of their La Liga campaign, Los Blancos made the trip to the Estadio Carlos Tartiere, for a meeting with newly-promoted Real Oviedo.

When all was said and done, Xabi Alonso’s troops emerged on the right side of a 3-0 result, to make it two wins from two to open the season.

Rounding out the scoring in the clash was the aforementioned Vinícius, who slotted a clever finish into the bottom corner of the Oviedo net deep into injury-time.

This, however, only came after the Brazilian was forced to make do with a spot on the bench from the off on Sunday.

Speaking to the media in the game’s aftermath, the subject of his decision to leave Vinícius out was therefore put to manager Xabi Alonso.

And the Spanish tactician went on to explain:

“My decision to bench Vini? I make all my decisions thinking of what’s best for the team. For today, this was my decision.”
