Xabi Alonso explains Real Madrid star’s lack of minutes

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has provided an insight into the reasoning behind the lack of game-time afforded to Blancos youngster Gonzalo García across the season to date.

Attacker Gonzalo has for his part been forced to make do with just a bit part role in Spain’s capital thus far in 2025/26.

After exploding onto the scene at the Club World Cup over the summer, the 21-year-old was rewarded with a new contract, and a permanent place in the first-team setup at Real Madrid.

This was expected to give rise to a prominent role for Gonzalo moving forward.

To this point in the term, however, the Spaniard has been handed just a solitary start across all competitions.

He has instead been used as an impact substitute, albeit often with barely enough time on the pitch to make any kind of meaningful difference.

Speaking to the media during his latest press conference on Tuesday, the subject of Gonzalo’s minimal role was therefore put to manager Xabi Alonso.

And Real Madrid’s headmaster was honest in his response, explaining:

“Gonzalo? His performance at the Club World Cup was spectacular. But we didn’t have Kylian Mbappé… Now we have Kylian and he’s playing very well. Gonzalo may not be playing all the minutes he deserves, but he’s very intelligent, knows his role, and is always ready.”
