Why Rodrygo was handed zero minutes of playing time for Real Madrid vs Osasuna

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has provided an insight into his decision to leave Rodrygo on the bench for the entirety of his side’s meeting with Osasuna on Tuesday.

Real Madrid are of course fresh off getting their La Liga campaign up and running yesterday evening.

This came by way of a clash with the aforementioned Osasuna, at the Santiago Bernabéu.

When all was said and done, Los Blancos emerged on the right side of a hard-fought 1-0 result, owing to a solitary goal on the part of Kylian Mbappé.

As alluded to above, though, it was another member of the hosts’ attacking ranks who took his place centre stage in the headlines post-match.

This came after the aforementioned Rodrygo, amid ongoing speculation surrounding his future at Real Madrid, was not afforded a single minute of playing time.

Speaking to the media in his ensuing press conference, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of his call to leave the Brazilian out was put to manager Xabi Alonso.

And the Spanish tactician went on to explain:

“Rodrygo? Nothing is happening. I count on Rodrygo of course, it’s just a game. This was my decision.”
