Why Nico Williams was dropped to the bench for Athletic Club vs Real Sociedad

Athletic Club head coach Ernesto Valverde has provided an explanation for his decision to leave Nico Williams out of his starting XI to face Real Sociedad.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Basque Derby, Valverde was drawn on his selection calls for the evening.

When specifically questioned on winger Nico, who has come under heavy scrutiny for the level of his performances of late, the Spanish tactician explained:

“He’s been carrying a slight knock. Watching the game, it might have been a bit much to start him. We’ll see how the match goes and if he’s able to play.”

This comes fresh off Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte launching a stern defence of Nico earlier in the day.

Valverde also opened up on the challenges posed by a season back in the Champions League, in adding:

“Teams are stronger in the Champions League. In the Europa League, we had a better chance of advancing. Last season, the results went our way, but this year it’s more complicated with stronger opponents. We started the season well, then hit a bit of a rough patch. We’ll see if we can get back on track and start picking up points because the competition in La Liga is incredibly tight.”

As things stand during the first-half at Anoeta on Saturday, Athletic and Real Sociedad remain deadlocked at 0-0.
