Why Marc Casadó started ahead of Gavi for Barcelona vs Levante

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has provided an insight into the reasoning behind Marc Casadó being afforded a starting berth for the club’s latest outing.

Barcelona, of course, are currently locked in La Liga action.

In the 2nd outing of the club’s 2025/26 campaign, the Blaugrana have made the trip to Valencia, for a meeting with newly-promoted Levante.

In the buildup to the clash, much of the chatter centered on Hansi Flick’s plans for his midfield, after Frenkie de Jong was left out of Barca’s matchday squad following the birth of his 2nd child.

Widespread reports pointed towards Gavi being the favourite to step in alongside Pedri.

In the end, though, it was the transfer-linked Marc Casadó who was given the nod from the off at the Estadi Ciutat de València.

Speaking to the media ahead of kick-off, the subject of this selection call was therefore put to Hansi Flick himself.

And the German went on to explain:

“Casadó playing? We slightly changed the structure and need more defensive positioning, and that’s why he’s playing.”
