Why Gerard Martín replaced Frenkie de Jong in Barcelona’s pre-Eintracht press conference

An explanation for Barcelona’s decision to shake things up at the last minute for the club’s latest pre-match press conference has come to the fore online.

For those who may have missed it, Barca turned heads across Catalunya’s capital on Monday evening.

This came upon word coming to the fore that Frenkie de Jong, chosen to accompany manager Hansi Flick in the press conference before the Blaugrana’s meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt, had been pulled from his media duties.

Instead, Gerard Martín was the player called to face the press.

This development gave rise to a whole host of rumours, with some having speculated that De Jong had refused to fulfill his commitments.

This, however, was not at all the case.

As revealed by Diario Sport, the move instead came as a reward for Gerard Martín, amid a stellar run of recent individual form:

‘Someone from the club slipped that it would be a good idea to highlight the great season that Gerard Martín is having and give him the prize of gaining visibility with a press conference in a Champions League preview.’
