Why Frenkie de Jong was dropped from Barcelona XI to face Olympiacos

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has provided an explanation for the absence of Frenkie de Jong from his latest starting line-up.

Barcelona are of course currently locked in action, on the continent.

Fresh off putting Girona to the sword in La Liga over the weekend, the Blaugrana have shifted focus back towards matters on the continent.

This comes by way of a Champions League showdown with Greek heavyweights Olympiacos.

Ahead of a hectic upcoming fixture list for his side, Hansi Flick opted to shake up his XI for the evening once again, with the likes of Fermín López and Pedro ‘Dro’ Fernández stepping back into starting roles.

Dropping out, on the other hand, was the aforementioned Frenkie de Jong.

Drawn on the reasoning behind as much ahead of kick-off, Barca headmaster Flick in turn explained:

“Frenkie played in a different position in the last game and ran a lot. We’re taking care of him, and that’s why he isn’t starting.”
