A bizarre story surrounding Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski has this week come to the fore online.
This comes amid claims that those behind the scenes at the Spotify Camp Nou requested for the Pole to stop scoring goals late in his debut season with the club.
The info comes courtesy of the book ‘Lewandowski: The Real One’, written by Sebastian Staszewski (as cited by Diario Sport).
Lewandowski, it is claimed, was called into a meeting by the Barcelona board late in his debut season in Catalunya’s capital, the details of which are outlined as follows:
“‘Robert, we want you to stop scoring goals in the last few games.’ The player looked at him in amazement. Although the championship title was already decided, as was the award for the best scorer, in more than a decade playing at the highest level, no one had asked him to stop scoring a goal in his entire career.”
This request, laid out by an unnamed Blaugrana director, came with a view to saving money.
With the La Liga title already wrapped up, and Lewandowski guaranteed of the Pichichi award with 23 goals to his name, the veteran frontman was asked not to find the net in either of the club’s final two league fixtures.
As much ensured that Barcelona were not forced to fork over a €2.5 million bonus payment agreed upon with Bayern Munich as part of the transfer which sent ‘Lewa’ to the Camp Nou.
This would have come into effect in the case of the Polish international racking up 25 La Liga goals.
