Why Arda Güler rejected Barcelona to join Real Madrid

An insight into the thought process behind Arda Güler’s summer move to Real Madrid has been provided late this evening.

Turkish sensation Güler, of course, opted to depart his home country in favour of the bright lights of the Santiago Bernabéu last July.

The move came on the back of something of a breakout season on the part of the 18-year-old, which, despite his tender years, saw Güler emerge as a central figure at Super Lig giants Fenerbahce.

The midfielder has since gone on to endure a difficult start to life in Spain, confined to the sidelines owing to a string of fitness concerns.

This past weekend, though, Güler provided the Real Madrid faithful with just a glimpse of his frankly remarkable talents, after being afforded his long-awaited debut in the club’s Copa del Rey downing of Arandina.

On the other hand, the Turk’s showing saw many of a Barcelona persuasion curse their luck, after the Blaugrana too expressed a keen interest in his signature during the summer.

Amid fresh chatter over Real’s transfer battle triumph over their Clásico rivals, the question of precisely why Güler opted for a move to Madrid over Catalunya has too returned to the fore.

And, this evening, an explanation for as much has been forthcoming online.

The info comes courtesy of the reliable Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, who has revealed that the gifted starlet was left ‘unconvinced’ by the project put before him by Barcelona.

‘Institutional and economic instability’ are cited as the leading causes for concern, with Güler having been unwilling to add his name to the list of players whom Barca have been forced to manoeuvre finances to ensure their registration with La Liga over recent months.

This opened the door for Real Madrid – who had identified the Turk as a priority signing as far back as March – to swoop in decisive fashion.
