‘What are you doing?’ – Steven Gerrard speaks on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Real Madrid switch

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has this week spoken publicly regarding the decision of former Reds star Trent Alexander-Arnold to head to Spain.

This of course comes after the defender made the brave call to depart Anfield over the summer.

After opting to reject the lucrative renewal terms on offer in his home city in favour of a new adventure, Alexander-Arnold went on to put pen to paper on a deal with Real Madrid.

The decision sparked widespread criticism and abuse across the Liverpool fanbase, who made collectively clear their feelings that the club’s long-time full-back was essentially betraying them.

And as alluded to above, this week, one of the Merseyside outfit’s greatest-ever players has provided his take on the situation, too.

Speaking during an appearance on Rio Ferdinand’s personal podcast (as cited by Mundo Deportivo), Steven Gerrard began:

“Any player is going to pay attention if Barcelona or Real Madrid come for him. Real Madrid came for me when Mourinho was there, really. And I listened. It wasn’t talked about much because we said no pretty quickly, but I listened. They had my attention. It’s Real Madrid. No matter who you are, if those clubs come, you think about it. And if they don’t, you’re not human. That’s why I understand the situation with Trent. His best friend plays there, maybe he wants a new challenge, he’s already won everything at Liverpool… There’s a part of me that understands.”

Englishman Gerrard was more blunt, though, in adding:

“But if I put on a Liverpool shirt, I think, ‘What are you doing? You’re in one of the best teams in Europe, winning things I still dream of winning, you’re one of the most important players on the team, the fans adore you, what are you doing?”
