Vicente del Bosque: “I tried everything to get Messi to play for Spain.”

Vicente del Bosque gave an interview to Radio Marca, in which he was asked about Lionel Messi and his view regarding the appointment of Luis de la Fuente as the new head coach of the Spanish national team.

Del Bosque revealed that Messi is the best player he has ever seen:

“The best player I have ever seen is Messi. Between Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, I’ll take Messi. Of all the players I have known in so many years in football, for me Messi, for his consistency and his quality as a player, has been impressive. He has had some fantastic seasons and has always led his team forward.”

The former Spain coach also revealed that he tried to get Messi to change his allegiance to La Roja:

“I tried everything to get Messi to play for Spain. However, Lionel refused because of the love he has for his country.”

Del Bosque believes that the national team is in good hands with the appointment of De la Fuente:

“Luís de la Fuente has very good relations with everyone and has good knowledge of football.”
