Surprise Real Madrid star being tested as Aurélien Tchouaméni’s backup

A member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid could act as the backup to Aurélien Tchouaméni at the base of the club’s midfield this coming season.

That’s according to Diario AS, who point towards David Alaba as the player in question.

Veteran defender Alaba for his part boasts plenty of experience lining out in the middle of the park, for both Bayern Munich, and the Austrian national team.

On the lookout for options in his side’s engine room amid the ongoing absence of Eduardo Camavinga, Xabi Alonso has therefore tested the 33-year-old in the position in each of Real Madrid’s pre-season outings.

And according to AS, should this experiment give rise to the desired results, it is entirely possible that Alaba will take on a full-time midfield role in 2025/26:

‘If the Austrian ends up performing there, he could be a good solution for when Tchouameni is injured and out.’
